My father never hired a plumber or carpenter. We did everything ourselves and I was the one handing him the tools when he needed them. He told me "This is how its done" I watched and listened. Not always willingly but it stuck. When I was young, it was sticks and crayons.
Rocks, blocks and Legos.
After seeing a documentary on Glass Workers in Murano, Italy, off I went to become a Glassblower. Sculptural welding, got added to the list. 3D modeling and graphic design, because it was a more "marketable" form of expression. But, I was always building and eventually had spent time in almost every aspect of residential construction. Everything from a summer job framing new homes, to tiling bathrooms and finish carpentry like cabinetry, trim, and woodworking.
I learned that the things I did well were fueled by passion and that I could design and build things for money.
Things people actually wanted...
